This project was based at the Department of International Development. They are the hub for the University of Oxford’s work in development and a unit of the University’s Social Sciences Division. It was a 4 storey new extension of an existing building including the basement level.
It was tendered with Longcross and then value-engineered to meet the client’s budget.
Mechanical works included LTHW pipework to new Stelrad radiators with some architectural Hudevad vertical radiators. There was a new Passivent natural ventilation system for all storeys which utilises the 4 existing main chimneys as the central ventilation stack. Roof solar panels were mounted to work in tandem with the existing heating system. A Trend BMS control system also linked into the existing system. There were servery and toilet refurbishments to the existing building area with associated pipework, sanitaryware and catering equipment.
Electrical services consisted of an under floor trunking system which distributes power and fire alarm control to various workfaces in the building with wall mounted dado trunking and floor boxes all supplying small power and data points. Surface suspended luminaires were installed throughout together with a new fire alarm system, security access control, CCTV, emergency lighting and lightning protection. The university also required an extension to their IT network with full data cabling providing 2 new hubs to link into their existing system.
